DISCUSSION PARTICIPANTS: ALISON AUBRECHT, ELENA RUIZ, OCTAVIAN ROBINSON
We are currently working on captioning the video. In the meantime, check out the text version of the original article. This discussion is a response to Brendan Stern's article, "The Importance of Engaging Governor Daugaard."
Being a CODA, it is much nicer to see the vlog version, but I'll take either. This site is doing a wonderful job of keeping people informed. It gives us the information we need in order to become more socially active. Thank you to all who contribute.

I truly appreciate this video and it is worth watching and examining ourselves. This really need further discussion.
ReplyDeleteI beg you, Alison, Elena and Octavian if you could create a list of questions for discussion as a follow up among the community, AND what are the solutions or suggestions for the change?
For example, I am aware of my own privileges and I may have unconsciously oppress minorities, and I consistently try to examine my own behavior and actions within the community. You were talking about the system that is inherently oppress minorities, and how can we change that?
Could you kindly offer some examples that works? Please?
Thank you so much for this wonderful work and passion.

Lot of analysis going on in here and it is much appreciated knowing as a v/blogger, it takes a lot of time and effort involved in writing and signing.
ReplyDeleteIt surely made me think further, not only about the previous actions taken by NAD and Stern’s article, but taking a deeper look at ourselves. A lot of information to digest so pardon me for repeating as I would like to summarize what I am getting from this v/blog making sure that I am getting the pointers.
So far, we have recognized that: (but not limited to)
- those who are oppressed continue to oppress the others and this cycle need to be broken.
- such actions made by NAD by inviting Governor Daugaard is creating a loss of minority respect leading to a higher degree of division of an organization as a whole. It bothers me that based on the previous NAD board minutes, none of the board members had approved or acknowledge the invitation of Daugaard so who really invited him? Was this a one person decision?
-grabbing tall straws holding power like Duagaard is not necessarily the best interest for the Deaf especially when it doesn’t represent the general Deaf demographic.
-eliminate the mentality of “we and the diverse” or in other words “us vs. them” is so important and this needs to be further examined.
-NAD’s announcement on their supportive position for the GLBT and inviting Duugard who symbolizes opposition on minorities’ rights as a plenary speaker is indeed a contradiction.
-providing a platform to discuss or debate that engages all of the minorities in the audience vs. inviting a plenary speaker that are usually occupied by the white privileged is indeed two different things.
Thumbs up! Keep up with the good work!
